One day a quiet young woman came to dwell in the cottage to which the garden was attached. She seldom ventured into the village, prefering to wander into the garden and nearby forest, collecting berries, herbs, and roots. The bees watched this behaviour with suspicion for it was unlike a fair young maiden to live in this isolated manner. They began to follow her daily amblings, growing ever more convinced of her questionable nature. Once in the woods she appeared to pray over a crushed ladybug until it became quite sprightly and fly away into the sky. This act, witnessed by a consort of worker bees confirmed their fears that unwelcome deeds were afoot in their garden.

Raewyn Martyn's residency takes the form of a working studio set up around the investigation of how abstract paint-based interventions and wall works operate in public space, both on-site and outside of a public gallery setting. The working studio will research recent related practice and present these findings in the form of a reading table in the gallery, a blog, and studio work.

The residency will result in a series of wall-works realised in offsite public space during April 2011. They will investigate how abstract painterly activity within public space can activate surfaces and engage with the lived visual experience of the space. Working drawings show use of found frames within exterior architecture, and surfaces. Potential sites include exterior walls, and walls and surfaces within spaces used for hospitality or other forms of exchange.

Ghuznee Street Art Billboard launched as new public art project for Wellington

A new public artwork launched in Wellington tomorrow (Tuesday 30 November) challenges viewers to think about history and the often forgotten stories hidden in the landscapes that surround us.

Wellington artist Ann Shelton has been selected to create the first artwork for the Ghuznee Street Art Billboard project and her work engages directly with Wellington’s early history.

The work titled Capital, execution site, formerly The Terrace Gaol, The Terrace, Te Aro, Wellington is a recent photograph of what was once the gaol site. However, those who recognise the spot will realise that it is not a straight depiction and Shelton’s reversal of the image immediately raises questions and complicates its interpretation.

Supported by the Creative Communities Wellington Local Funding Scheme and Bartley + Company Art, the billboard projected has been established to give artists an opportunity to work at a large scale and to intervene in the predominantly commercial nature of the city’s visual culture.

Alison Bartley of Bartley + Company Art says there was a great response to the call for proposals from local artists who seem excited by the project. The funding covers three art billboards and three artists have been selected with each art billboard to be up for three months. With many very strong proposals the selection panel (comprising Bartley, Te Papa’s senior curator and a representative from City Arts) had a challenging task selecting three finalists. The other artists will be announced when their projects are installed in March and June 2011.

Ann Shelton says she is pleased to have the opportunity to communicate to an urban public in addition to the specific art audience who visit galleries. She has written about her work:

The image depicts the approximate space where executions occured in Wellington in the 19th century. The image, printed in reverse (a mirror image), reactivates the public memory of Wellington and re-scripts the moral and ethical narratives that we take for granted in/about our city. This work provides a context for the reevaluation of city space, its social and juridical uses.

Now close of the recreational and educational areas of Victoria University and Te Aro School the site around which the executions occured reflects Walter Benjamin’s famous statement that ‘every site is the scene of a crime’, in this case acts of great violence. This artwork raises complex questions regarding the relationships between land use, history, trauma, ethics and crime as they circulate in relation to Wellington City. Crucially, these apsects of our city’s history are largely unknown and complicate the narratives of urban pride and positivity that are at large in our city culture. Argueing for a city more cogniscant of its chequered past and one that remembers its failures, this work attempts to activate discourse via the potential of photography’s testimonial ability.

My ongoing research investigates how events are displaced in the landscape, what that means and how an examination of these events can affect contemporary knowledge. I am interested in these histories not as a nostalgic look back to the past nor as a goulish infatuation with it, but as a way to critically negotiate the meta discourses that are at work in the mechanisims of these events. My images ask what is remembered, what is recorded and reiterated – "If memory is reflection then Shelton’s images are about the anxiety of what is able to be really known and kept."[1]

Ann Shelton is an artist and Senior Lecturer at Massey University School of Fine Arts, Wellington. She has exibited widely both in New Zealand and overseas and her work is in numerous local and international collections. Earlier this year she won the COCA Anthony Harper Contemporary Art Award and in 2006 the Trust Waikato Contemporary Art Award.

The Enjoy Trust has been invited to take hold of the gallery space from late September, and during this time they will be working on a project that celebrates Enjoy's social, inclusive and community-focussed spirit: through Enjoy Recipes Illustrated (A Cookbook In Progress).

Readers of the Enjoy Blog may have noticed that for the past few weeks recipes have been appearing. These recipe submissions are in preparation for the Enjoy Trust's curated project, during which time familiar and new members of the Enjoy community have the opportunity to partake in the construction of an art/recipe book through an open call for artistic responses to any selected recipe. Food is a basic, yet pleasurable necessity, and is something we can all relate to. We all have to cook at some point and cooking is afterall a creative endeavour.

To participate check out the recipes on the Enjoy blog, chose one (or several) and respond to them in any manner or medium that grabs you. Additional recipes will be appearing through the course of the show, and submitted responses will be on display in the gallery space. Please note that submitted responses may need to be documented in a 2D format for inclusion in the publication (although not all submissions will be published) and may end up on the Enjoy blog, in the gallery space for people to then make artistic responses to, and/or in an edited art/recipe book - which will be published in coming months. Any posted responses need to include pre-paid postage and envelope/carton packaging for returning artwork.

There is not an opening for this show. Instead, the Trust has decided to donate the artist's fee for this show back to its community through the hosting of a feast and recipe book launch later in the year, showcasing some of the recipes and submissions.

Overview of Role:

This role has two equally important points of focus: firstly to generate and solicit writing, publications and publicity about Enjoy’s programme and secondly to support the Curator/Manager in the day-to-day administration of the gallery, upholding the aims and values outlined in the Enjoy Vision and Mission statements below:

Vision

Enjoy generates and facilitates contemporary art projects to promote the discourse of contemporary art practice in all its forms.

Mission

Enjoy is liberated from commercial constraints in order to provide both emerging and established practitioners with opportunities to develop innovative work. Enjoy works to provide the necessary critical support, resources, and audience development to realise quality projects in dialogue with contemporary practice both nationally and internationally.

You will work closely with the Curator/Manager and Trustees to promote and publicise Enjoy’s programme. You will build relationships with media groups and key arts and cultural organizations. You will also be responsible for Enjoy’s online presence, including managing, publishing to and updating the Enjoy website www.enjoy.org.nz, publishing to the website and blog.

You will work with the Curator/Manager and Trustees to develop ideas for Enjoy publications and monographs in print and online. You will personally oversee these projects through the process of commissioning, editing, proofing, design, printing and distribution – working with a range of contributors including artists, writers, and designers.

Alongside these activities you will provide administrative support for the everyday running of Enjoy’s programme as directed by the Curator/Manager and Trustees.

Key Skills Sought:

The successful applicant will have:

• An interest in and engagement with contemporary art, in both a national and international context

• A relevant tertiary qualification in eg, fine or visual arts, museum studies, art history, publishing/communications, or creative writing

• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including editing experience

• Proven experience and knowledge of the publication production process

• The ability to manage other contributors to projects, including writers and designers

• A good working understanding of the web including familiarity with social media applications and web maintenance skills. Advanced web skills would also be a bonus.

• Computer skills: including a solid knowledge of word processing programmes. Familiarity with MYOB, Excel, and Photoshop would be a plus.

• An understanding of basic budget processes

• Basic exhibition and gallery installation skills

• Excellent time management skills and an ability to plan and execute tasks

• Excellent self motivation and the ability to work both autonomously, and as part of a small, but energetic and committed team.

It's true... the Enjoy sandwich board has gone missing!!

Pictured here in 2005 (beckoning visitors to Caroline Johnston's Lucky Sod), the sandwich board has informed many-a pedestrian of the curious happenings upstairs, and been the bane of many-a volunteer's afternoon in lugging it back inside at closing.

We'd love to hear anything about where it may have ended up, leads ect. One can only imagine (GIVE IT BACK!)

Switch is: 8 artworks in 8 vacant spaces in a town centre for one week, from 5pm to 11pm in the evening. A temporary public intervention that shows contemporary visual art in a public context.

This is what it takes for art to make the mass media in New Zealand... artists that spin with flair and get their projects on air, are few. One of recent note, is Wellington artist James R Ford.

James' Primera Disaster: Smash 'n' Tag project was on... 3 News, 1 News, Radio Active, three other radio stations I can't remember the name of (including live feeds), Dominion Post twice, including a full feature and image on the front page, and Breakfast with Paul Henry. Catch a glimpse from this mass of coverage, here. Artists like James should be giving guest lectures in NZ art schools.

hypnosis as a collaborative medium

I can't help but feel pretty darn excited about the fact that Chicago-based artist Jacob C. Hammes will perform hypnosis with a handful of participants, mostly Wellington artists, in a collaborative group performance of “Deep Imagination Therapy” which he is the inventor and sole practitioner of... TONIGHT!

Anyone who attends will be invited to participate in the work, or simply to view the performance. Where: J.J. Morgan & Co., When: Thursday 15 June, 7pm.

This Sunday, 4 July at 6pm, Enjoy Curator and Manager Siv B. Fjærestad has invited interested parties, wherever they might be, to participate in two minutes of silence or screaming to mark a decade since the gallery's first exhibition opening. Documentation is encouraged [but not essential]. Enjoy a moment of silence to heed the past, to revisit old memories, or to plan your next move; take this moment to scream with excitement, with anticipation, with frustration, or just to be heard. Of course, this invitation is open to interpretation. But whatever you do, do something. See it as an opportunity to exercise your own piece of something that belongs to everyone.
